Huntington's Disease: An Overview
Download the Huntington's Disease: An Overview (Vol. 9, Issue 2) Neura Issue

The current issue of Neura features a review of the latest research in Huntington’s disease, including genetics, pathophysiology, and future therapeutic directions. Other articles include an analysis of the progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), a review of MAO-B inhibitors to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD), and a Highlights section that summarizes several articles published recently in the literature.

CME Huntington's Disease: An Overview
Xenazine® (tetrabenazine) is the first approved therapy to treat a symptom of Huntington’s disease (HD). Emerging advances in research and management of HD have necessitated a concise update of the disease for practicing neurologists. This article provides an overview of the basics of HD, with emphasis placed on current or potential treatment options, including pharmaceutical therapy and stem cell implantation.

CME Understanding Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
Established long-term management strategies and disease-modifying therapies are lacking for patients with progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, as research continues to elucidate these progressive forms in the MS spectrum, it is important for neurologists to have a basic understanding of progressive MS. This article reviews the diagnostic criteria, management approaches, and clinical research related to the secondary-progressive MS and primary-progressive MS.

MAO-B Inhibitors in Parkinson’s Disease
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) have shown a great deal of promise in treating Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, considerable risks associated with ingestion of these agents necessitate close monitoring of patients’ diets and other drug regimens. In this article, 3 monoamine oxidase–B (MAO-B) inhibitors are reviewed, including 2 already approved to treat PD (rasagiline, selegiline) and 1 that has shown potential benefit (safinamide).

Highlights From the Literature
Highlights from recent articles about dementia include results from a trial comparing antidepressants in patients with PD and depression, a study assessing the viability of stem cell therapy to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and another ALS-related study that elucidates of the role of astrocytes in motor neuron death. **Online Exclusive** Also check out 2 more summaries involving PD animal models available only online.

Patient Tear-Out: Dealing With End-of-Life Issues
Neura provides a summary to patients about the multitude of issues surrounding end-of-life decisions. These issues include coming to terms with death, planning for the welfare of loved ones, end-of-life decision-making, extensive long-term medical care, and an overview of end-of-life legal issues.
